In this installment of our Toronto jersey countdown, we take a look at the city’s most historic franchise, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After looking back at some of the memorable Toronto Raptors, we decide to look at the other team that plays at Scotiabank Arena in the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Leafs have been around since 1917 so there are certainly a lot of choices when making a ranking of the top five jerseys of all-time.

1. Home Blues (2016-current)

It’s not often that teams look to the past to create their new jerseys, but if any team would be caught dwelling on ancient history, it would surely be the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 2016-2017, with the Auston Matthews era just about to begin, the Leafs announced that they’d be bringing back an ever-so-slightly altered version of their old crest. In what was a rare win for the sports apparel industry, the move got near-unanimous acceptance from fans.

The switch to the retro leaf seemed to work. The team returned to the playoffs for the first time since the event that we don’t speak about, but bowed out in the first round to the Washington Capitals.

The move also coincided with the last year of Reebok’s agreement with the NHL to supply jerseys. After 2016-2017, Adidas took over the contract.

Although the general look of the uniform remained unchanged under Adidas, the Brand with the Three Stripes added stippling on the shoulders, which knocks the newer version out of contention for this list. Hey, they’ve been playing for 103 years, the bar is set high.

The new threads may not have curbed the trend of first-round playoff exits, but for one season, the Toronto Maple Leafs had a jersey that perfectly balanced their storied past and bright future.
