Toronto Argonauts: Ranking the 6 Grey Cup wins since 1991
By Paul Taylor
4) 100th Grey Cup
We appreciate it’s easy to write this with the benefit of hindsight, but the Argonauts were just destined to play in the milestone event of the 100th Grey Cup. After all, they had the most championships in CFL history and the game was being played in Toronto, where the first ever Grey Cup was held.
The element of fate was only reinforced when the Argos went into the Olympic Stadium a week earlier and stunned the Alouettes 27-20. Montreal had a superior 11-7-0 record during the regular season and were the big favourites entering the East Final.
After a week of celebrations in Toronto to commemorate 100 years of the Grey Cup, it was now up to the Double Blue to win it all. Standing in their way were the Calgary Stampeders, who were slight favourites despite losing both games to the Argonauts during the 2012 regular season.
After a tense start by both teams, the game turned into a surprisingly one-sided affair. The Argos took control and never looked back, thanks to a pick-six by Pacinco Horne to begin the second quarter.
Ricky Ray had a decent enough game, as he overcame an early interception to calmly lead the offence. However, it says a lot about his high standards, that only completing 18 of 30 attempts for 231 yards and two scores was considered an average outing.
Fortunately for the Toronto Argonauts they didn’t need Ray to put on a passing clinic, as Chad Kackert dominated on the ground. Kackert just couldn’t be stopped, as he ran for 133 yards on only 20 carries.
As if to prove how much of a zone he was in, the Simi Valley, California native also had eight catches for another 62 yards. He was named the outstanding player of the 100th Grey Cup, in a game that wasn’t as close as the 35-22 scoreline suggests.
Among the other reasons the win proved notable, was because it came in Scott Milanovich’s first year as head coach. While he did an excellent job overall during his five seasons in Toronto, he would never again reach the heights of that inaugural campaign.
As if to highlight the surprising nature of the Argonauts’ championship, their .500 regular season winning percentage was the worst of the 16 Grey Cups they had claimed. (Incidentally, they would also go 9-9-0 when they won in 2017.) When it was all over, the team had done their fans and the city of Toronto proud.
