3) Expect the unexpected from the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5

Friday night proved the only thing we know for sure when it comes to the Leafs – the only certainty when it comes to this team, is the uncertainty which surrounds it. You never know what you’re going to get from them.

The Leafs are a team high in both talent level and inconsistency, something which has been highlighted perfectly throughout their series with the Blue Jackets. This inconsistency is to such an extent that you never know what you’re going to see from period to period, never mind game to game.

More from Toronto Maple Leafs

This was summed up perfectly by the Leafs setting NHL history on Friday night, as reported by the Canadian Press via TSN. They became the first team to overcome a deficit of three or more goals to win, after surrendering a lead of three or more goals to lose their previous game.

When the Leafs are on, they’re on. It’s truly impressive to watch the way they can dismantle an excellent defensive unit such as the Blue Jackets.

However, this is only matched by periods when the Leafs look barely able to even register a shot at goal, never mind produce a sustained attack. It is this inconsistency which is both infuriating and keeps fans on the edge of their seats.

In theory, you can make a genuine argument that this play-in series should already be over. However, such is the unpredictable nature of Toronto, we’re talking about equally feasible scenarios where both they and Columbus have advanced to the first round proper of the playoffs.

Certainly, it’s been a roller coaster ride for both teams and sets of fans, which will finally come to a conclusion on Sunday night. Just don’t expect us to predict who will win with any degree of confidence or certainty whatsoever.
