Toronto Blue Jays: Breaking down each 2020 MLB Draft pick
CJ Van Eyk
On Day 2 of the draft, the Blue Jays decided to add another formidable arm to a rebuilt pitching system.
CJ Van Eyk decided to go to college after getting picked in the 19th round by the New York Mets. Safe to say that decision paid off considering he was picked in the second round.
In that time he improved his stock with a strong mix of pitches with a fastball that can reach 95 mph, a curveball and a changeup. He mainly pitched out of the bullpen to start his college career and eventually made his way into the rotation.
Here is what MLB.com had to say about Van Eyk who was their 38th ranked prospect.
"Van Eyk has a solid three-pitch mix that he knows how to use extremely well. He’s been up to 95 mph, usually working in the 93-94 mph range, with his fastball and commands it well to both sides of the plate. He really knows how to spin his curveball, a breaking ball with almost 12-to-6 action that has really good late downward bite. He throws it in the upper-70s more often than not, but can add and subtract as needed. His changeup is his third pitch, and would be more effective if it had more sink, but he does throw it with good arm speed to fool hitters. MLB.com scouting report."
Being the ace of the rotation at Florida State should give the 21-year-old a chance to showcase himself as a starter. Considering his curveball got a 60 grade, that will likely be a pitch that can go to if he wants to throw hitters off balance.
Where he will need to work on is his control and coming up with a fourth pitch that can help his prospect as a major league starter.
