7. Will Johnson? Will Johnson!

Speaking of Canadian Championship thrillers, TFC’s loss that wasn’t a loss against Vancouver in 2016 ranks right up there with the best of them. Following a 1-0 victory over the Whitecaps at BMO Field, the Reds travelled to BC Place for the second leg to challenge for the fourth Voyageurs Cup.

The ‘Caps, who won the cup the year previous, would not roll over. Nicolas Mezquida squared the affair on aggregate in the 47th minute, and Tim Parker broke the deadlock in the 68th.

As time wound down, it looked like Vancouver was going to repeat as champions. However, an unheralded Canadian international by the name of Will Johnson had other plans.

After a calamitous collision between Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted and defender Kendall Waston, the ball squirted free to Johnson. Five minutes deep into stoppage time, he put his foot through the ball, driving it into the roof of the net.

TFC lost the match 2-1, but due to the away goals rule, they were awarded their fourth Canadian Championship. Johnson only scored one other goal for the Reds in his lone season in Toronto, but his late game heroics will not soon be forgotten.
