The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced a trade that sees defenceman Calle Rosen return to the Canadian team from the Colorado Avalanche.

Calle Rosen is once again a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organisation, being involved in a trade deadline day move that sees the Swedish blueliner swapped for goaltender Michael Hutchinson.

Rosen was originally part of last summer’s trade that saw Nazem Kadri head to Colorado in exchange for Alexander Kerfoot and Tyson Barrie.

Prior to the trade, the Växjö native was a key member of the Leafs’ AHL affiliates the Toronto Marlies, helping the team to a Calder Cup championship under current Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe.

More from Toronto Maple Leafs

He made 116 regular-season appearances for the Marlies, racking up 11 goals and 66 total points in the minor league, adding a further 12 points (6G, 6A) in 23 playoff games.

Despite playing regularly in the minors, Rosen wasn’t able to crack the NHL roster in his two seasons in Toronto, combining for just eight regular-season games with the blue and white.

Since being traded to Colorado, very little has changed for the 26-year-old left-handed shot, who has played the majority of the season with the Colorado Eagles.

In 35 AHL games with the Eagles, Rosen has five goals and 15 total points, while registering two assists in the eight NHL games he appeared in for the Avalanche.

Hutchinson, who has been sent to Colorado in exchange for the blueliner, had a difficult time trying to establish himself as the Toronto Maple Leafs backup goaltender.

In 15 appearances in the NHL this season, he had a 4-9-1 record with a save percentage of just .886 and a goals against average of 3.66.

With the acquisition of Jack Campbell from the LA Kings earlier this month, Hutchinson was sent down to the Marlies, making him fairly expendable with the likes of Kasimir Kaskisuo and Joseph Woll already playing regularly in the minors.

This is largely a minor league deal for the Maple Leafs organisation, seeing the Marlies receive some defensive help while offloading a spare asset in exchange.
