Can the Bills defense handle the Texans’ backfield?

The Bills’ defense should be well prepared to take on Houston’s talented offense, with star cornerback Tre’Davious White leading the way. The 2017 first rounder had 58 tackles, 6 INT and 17 pass deflections in 2019, so look for him to be a constant disturbance in the passing game.

Aside from White, Buffalo’s pass defense has been spectacular all season. They ranked 3rd in the NFL in opponent passer rating, 4th in opponent YPG and 4th in opponent yards per attempt. This is a huge strength, especially in a matchup against a very capable passing game. Look for White specifically to go toe to toe with Hopkins all game long as the Bills will attempt to lock down Watson’s top weapon.

One weakness for this defense lies in their ability to cover running backs in the passing game. They tied for 19th in the NFL this season in receptions allowed to running backs, something that Houston’s Duke Johnson can potentially exploit.

Stopping the run has been an uphill climb for the Bills defense at times, having ranked 18th in opponent yards per carry, with 4.3. If Houston’s offense flourishes in this contest, it’ll be due to the Bills’ inability to shut down Hyde and Johnson in the backfield, and potentially allowing Watson to create plays with his speed.

Buffalo’s defense has kept them alive in many games this season. The question becomes whether they can continue this style of play in the playoffs or if Houston will expose them, especially in the running game.
