NFL Playoff Preview: How the Buffalo Bills stack up against the Houston Texans
Bills offence should lean heavily on rushing game
Buffalo’s offense remained a work in progress in 2019, but certainly took steps forward. Second-year QB Josh Allen improved as a passer this season, with 20 TD, nine INT and an 85.3 passer rating.
He cut down on interceptions having thrown 12 last year, threw 10 more touchdowns than last season and improved his completion percentage from just under 53per cent to just under 59 percent.
Nonetheless, Buffalo’s passing game was near the bottom of the league this season. They ranked 26th in YPG, 31st in completion percentage and 26th in passer rating.
While they ranked 14th in yards per catch, the Bills also allowed 40 sacks this year, meaning that Josh Allen isn’t well protected. The passing game is mostly a home run style, meaning they seek the big plays to gain yardage. John Brown proved himself as the number 1 receiver on the team, and has enough speed and route-running ability to create big plays for himself.
Buffalo’s rushing game was the key to their success offensively this season. They ranked 8th in rushing YPG with 128.4 and 13th in yards per carry with 4.4. Devin Singletary had a strong breakout season with 775 yards, 5.1 yards per carry and 2 TD. Josh Allen also plays a major role in the rushing game, having 510 rushing yards, 9 TD and 4.7 yards per carry.
With their ability to run the ball very effectively and generate big plays in the passing game, the Bills are a representation of Josh Allen as a quarterback: big-play potential and a good rushing style that can lead to success. This makes them incredibly versatile and difficult to defend.
