Toronto Maple Leafs: 5 Bold prediction heading into the 2019-20 season
Mitch Marner notches 100 points
Like Matthews, Mitch Marner will look to prove he was deserving of the double-digit payday from the Leafs and what better way than score 100 or more points in a season.
After seeing his points total go up drastically to 94 points in 82 games, you always wonder if there is a way for the 22-year-old to improve on that? One obvious way will be to try and improve the goal totals after scoring 26 goals last season.
Marner has taken an effort to take more shots on goal last season putting up 233 after he had 194 shots on goal the previous year. Can he put 30 or more goals in a season? That should be doable considering he probably passed up opportunities to make a pass so you hope if he changes that mindset it will lead to an increase in production.
Considering he only had three goals on the power play, Marner would probably benefit from trying to do more on the man advantage considering opposing teams will try to limit what Matthews and John Tavares do on the power play. Of course, one last way is to try making more of an effort to get some scoring chances on the penalty kill like Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron do with the Boston Bruins.
It might seem like a tough task to reach 100 points considering how deep the Leafs team if upfront but Marner should be motivated to show he can do more after signing his big deal.
