7. The 11th inning miracle

Oakland A’s at Blue Jays – April 28, 2019

This game doesn’t have much meaning in the grand scheme of things, but wow was it wildly entertaining. With the game knotted at ones going into the eleventh inning, the Athletics decided they didn’t want to get season-swept by a non-playoff team.

With runs scoring on a sacrifice fly, RBI double and hit-by-pitch, players whose pay-checks come in green and gold crossed the plate three times in the inning, giving the A’s a commanding 4-1 lead into the bottom half. With RoCk SoLiD Blake Treinen returning to the game, after getting the last couple of outs in the tenth, the A’s were primed to salt this one away.

But the Blue Jays had other plans. Rowdy Tellez and Billy McKinney got aboard, setting the table for Brandon Drury. And Drury left the yard, moments later, Freddy Galvis picked up a knock and Justin Smoak brought him home with a scalding opposite-field single, completing a season sweep over the Oakland A’s, who ended up being a playoff team.

After conceding three runs in the top half, the Jays kept their heads and pulled a victory from the jaws of defeat. Any given day at the ballpark, something special can happen.
