3. Auston Matthews

It feels weird ranking Matthews third on a list where he’s only competing with his own teammates, but this is fantasy hockey. The only thing holding Matthews back is his health. If he stays healthy, he’ll be right up there competing for the #1 spot. Last season he managed to put up 73 points despite only playing in 68 games.

He has yet to hit 80 points in a season but if he plays in at least 75-80 games this season that won’t be an issue for him. If we consistently see the Matthews/Nylander duo that worked so well in the past I think both players will have incredible seasons.

There’s a bit more guesswork involved with where Matthews’ totals will end up, but the ceiling is high if he can stay on the ice.

2. Mitch Marner

I had a really tough time deciding between Marner and Matthews for the No. 2 spot, but it ultimately comes down to linemates. We know that Babcock likes the Tavares/Marner duo, and last season Marner put up 94 points playing alongside Tavares.

The big question is obviously still when (if at all) will Marner sign? I’m optimistic that we won’t have a repeat of last season with the William Nylander situation. GM Kyle Dubas and Marner both know that didn’t turn out well for anyone involved.

Assuming Marner is signed and ready to go for the regular-season opener, we could see him get really close to the 100-point mark. He doesn’t carry quite as much value as Tavares because he won’t score as many goals or take as many shots on goal, but he’ll likely finish with more points overall again. Expect him to go early in the second round of most drafts.
