2) Fred VanVleet looks like his old self

Given the (lack of) energy throughout the night, along with the final score, you could argue that Lowry’s absence was felt. However, the Raptors still did what it took to complete the task at hand.

One part of the reason for this was Fred VanVleet, who relished the opportunity to start in place of his injured teammate. As per Sportsnet, he said:

"“I didn’t miss him at all. Any time I can get extra minutes, and extra shots up, I’m happy.”"

Some analysts have criticized VanVleet, saying he hasn’t looked as dominant and efficient as last season. Fair or not, he took the opportunity to answer his critics on Saturday night in a rare start (just his third in three seasons), finishing with 15 points, four dimes, three boards and a steal.

No doubt, it will be pointed out the 24-year-old was playing against a poor opponent. Regardless, he looked comfortable enough in place of Lowry, taking on the quarterback role for the Raptors.

Lowry should be back sooner than later. However, it is reassuring to know that if and when he misses any more games, VanVleet can step in and lead the team effectively (albeit not at the same level as his teammate).
