TORONTO, ON – NOVEMBER 10: William Nylander /

Influence from his father

Micahel Nylander’s reputation from how he handled his contract negotiations have been well documented and this is why many aren’t surprised to see his son in a similar predicament.

So the real question is who are the Leafs negotiating with? Who is driving the negotiations because a recent report from Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston suggests it isn’t Wiliam.

"“The player’s father, Michael, is believed to be exerting considerable influence over his end of the talks and the former NHLer is no stranger to standing his ground come contract time (multiple messages to Michael Nylander from Sportsnet have gone unreturned in recent weeks).” –Johnston on Michael Nylander’s role with his son."

The fact that Michael hasn’t refuted the notion that he’s heavily involved in these negotiations should say all that needs to be said. Either him or Lewis Gross (Nylander’s agent) would have shot that down if they wanted to keep close out that narrative.

Now Nylander’s camp finds themselves in a position where they have to make a decision.; take less than what they’re asking for or stand their ground. At this point, if general manager Kyle Dubas is stuck dealing with Michael’s desires for his son then he should tell William and his agent that he isn’t going to play that game.

Maybe the 22-year-old is worried about not getting a fair deal and his father is trying his best to make sure that doesn’t happen but there comes a point where the player needs to handle his business considering he has an agent to help him with that.

Sure it’s a benefit to have your father’s experience during this process but considering Michael played for seven different teams, William needs to realize the path he’s currently on might not have the ending he desires.
