Toronto Maple Leafs prospect update: Rasmus Sandin scores in debut
Overseas
The Leafs don’t have many high profile prospects overseas but a couple who are worth keeping an eye on. Many decided to go back to get a head start on their pro careers while playing in their homeland which isn’t a terrible tradeoff.

Eemeli Räsänen decided to leave the Kingston Frontenacs in search of harder competition in the KHL with Jokerit and in six games so far, the defenceman has a goal. In an interview with a Finnish publication, the 2016 second round pick still sees the NHL as a goal for him but getting play time with Jokerit also keeps him on the radar for Finland during the Olympics.
Jesper Lindgren signed an entry-level deal with the Leafs but returned to HPK after playing 43 games last season. So far he’s halfway to his point total from last season with four points in 13 games after he had eight last season, he’s been getting a lot of minutes with HPK which probably explains his decision to return to Finland but he’ll probably keep an eye on another opportunity to play with the Marlies down the road.
Pontus Holmberg has moved up to the SHL fulltime this season and the 19-year-old and could be on Sweden’s roster at the World Juniors. He has three points in 11 games playing 14:30 a night but has seen a rise in playing time playing over 15 minutes a night over his last three games.
