Making his season debut for the Toronto Marlies, Rasmus Sandin didn’t waste time getting on the scoresheet as the latest Toronto Maple Leafs prospect to make an impact this season.

For two straight seasons the Toronto Maple Leafs have had to make an important decision regarding their first-round picks; do they send them to Sweden or play them in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies?

In the case of Timothy Liljegren (drafted 17th overall in 2017), the team decided to have him remain in North America where he could develop at his own pace as the Marlies had many options on the blueline.

For Rasmus Sandin (drafted 29th overall in 2018), many thought he would go back to Sweden following training camp to play with Rögle BK after spending last season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. However, the Marlies saw many defencemen make the jump to the NHL leaving their farm team with fewer options which explains why the team decided to keep Sandin rather than send him back.

This is an option afforded to the Leafs which proved to be effective with William Nylander and in time it should provide the same benefit for Liljegren and Sandin.

After missing the start of the season with a thumb injury, Sandin made his debut with the Marlies on Friday and he didn’t waste any time making an impact.

Here is how the rest of the Leafs prospects have been doing in the first month of the season in our latest prospect update.
