With Tosaint Ricketts not travelling to Chicago this weekend, speculation is rife that Toronto FC are on the verge of moving him.

The biggest news for Toronto FC this weekend, was undoubtedly the 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. In the process, the Reds ended a six-game winless streak in MLS play.

However, there has also been an interesting development away from the field for TFC. As confirmed by Joshua Kolke of The Athletic, Tosaint Ricketts did not make the trip to Chicago for the game.

This follows Ricketts not featuring in the midweek Canadian Championship clash against the Ottawa Fury. As a result, speculation about his future in Toronto has only intensified.

The 30-year-old has been the subject of transfer rumors for several weeks now. The question is, does his exclusion from the last two matchday squads mean a trade is imminent?

Certainly, it would make a lot of sense when considering the information at our disposal. It would also further explain why TFC acquired striker Jon Bakero, as part of the trade which saw Nicolas Hasler move to Chicago.

More from Toronto FC

Bakero would essentially be a cheaper, younger replacement. This year, Ricketts will make $203,174 (including a base salary of $190,008), while Bakero will earn $101,375 ($85,000).

Whether the Canadian international would be moved within MLS or somewhere abroad remains to be seen. However, for what it’s worth, his current market value is £600,000.

If Ricketts’ time in Toronto is indeed up, it will be a shame to see him leave. He has played his part as a key reserve up front in his time with TFC, helping them reach two consecutive MLS Cup finals.

During his first season in 2016, the Edmonton, Alberta native scored five goals, including two in the playoffs, in 17 appearances (with just four starts). Last year he helped the Reds set a new MLS record for points, scoring seven goals and adding one assist in 22 league games (including nine starts).

So far in 2018, Ricketts has two strikes in 14 games, including four starts. Pending how the transfer rumors play out, he has probably scored his last goal for Toronto FC.
