5) A career day against the old enemy

Galvanized by the offensive system put in place by new head coach Marc Trestman, Ray was ready to excel. However, no one could have envisioned exactly how much he’d excel right from the word go.

Looking to get the 2017 season off to a positive start, the Argonauts dominated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 32-15. And the Happy Camp, California native was a major part of the reason why.

By the end of the game, Ray had thrown for a career-high 506 yards. To do this in his 15th season was nothing short of remarkable, showing that he was aging like a fine wine.

The three-time CFL All-Star’s efficiency also stood out that day at BMO Field. He completed 78 percent of his passes, with one touchdown pass and — just as important — no interceptions.

However, it was the passing yardage which, quite rightly, took centre stage. For comparison, Ray finished just 18 yards short of the all-time franchise record, set in 1960 by Tobin Rote.
