Seattle Mariners

The first trip to the west coast didn’t work out the way Happ or the Mariners might have wanted but the circumstances the second time around should be better for Happ.

The Mariners have a decent rotation led by Canadian James Paxton but they want to contend for the playoffs and improving the starting pitching would only increase their chances. The Mariners have apparently joined the sweepstakes according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

GM Jerry Dipito made some interesting comments that many rental teams should try to leverage in any deal with Seattle.

"“What I try to do with every decision that’s made is balance the present and the future,” Dipoto said to the media. “Right now on the win curve, a win in 2018 is significant for us. We feel like we’re a contending team. “Frankly, a win in 2018 is more important to us than 2021. I know a win is a win, but we have to balance those. It could change. We might not play well in a three-week stretch, but right now we’re on pace to win 96-97 games and certainly we’d like to maintain that.”"

Seattle doesn’t have a wealth of prospects in their system but TJ Cotterill of Herald Net believes that Kyle Lewis (2016 first rounder) or Evan White would be the top trade chips.

The Mariners are not in a desperate spot to trade for pitching but going after Happ makes the most sense but the real question is whether they have the pieces to get a deal done.
