Owens –

With a defenceman taken in the draft already, Detroit can focus on adding to their forward depth. Olofsson is a good pick in this position.

While most have him projected as a third line centre once he develops and makes the NHL, he should have the chance to prove he can punch above that on the rebuilding Red Wings.

Playing in the second-tier of Swedish men’s hockey, Olofsson had a productive season alongside Canucks prospect Jonathan Dahlen.

While he will likely spend another season overseas — presumably in the SHL — Olofsson could make the jump to the AHL after that.

He’s not the flashiest talent on the board, but he is a safe and dependable forward, which is exactly what Detroit needs.

Morassutti –

The reigning Stanley Cup champions didn’t have a pick until the fourth round in 2017 and could look to replace some of their older defencemen down the line. They might find Samuelsson an intriguing option as a two-way defender.

He had 31 points in 58 games with the development program and is moving on to play with Western Michigan next season. He already has the ideal size for the NHL, which could give him an edge in his development.

One area that will need to work on is his skating, as he doesn’t have overwhelming speed or acceleration. He isn’t afraid to let a wrister go from the point. Samuelsson would be a welcomed addition to the Capitals when the time goes to move on from Brooks Orpik.
