We share seven facts about new right back Gregory van der Wiel, who officially signed for Toronto FC on Thursday morning.

Don’t look now, but Toronto FC might be in a position to be even better this coming season. As reported by Sportsnet‘s John Molinaro, the Reds officially announced the signing of Gregory van der Wiel on Thursday morning, after much speculation.

In the process, TFC upgraded the right back position, after Steven Beitashour left to join new MLS expansion side Los Angeles FC. Van der Wiel’s talent and pace also gives the team more licence to switch to different formations with minimal disruption.

Unsurprisingly, Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney was delighted with the signing. As reported by Kurtis Larson of the Toronto Sun, Vanney said:

"“We heard he might be interested in a change of scenery and we jumped at the opportunity because we know his qualities. He’s a very gifted and talented right fullback.”“He’s played at a number of big clubs, in huge matches. From an all-around soccer playing perspective he’s probably considered a world class right fullback. That’s a unique thing in our league.”"

So what exactly do you need to know about van der Wiel? Let’s find out more about TFC’s newest signing:

1) The Amsterdam native was first scouted by Ajax at the age of seven. He would go on to join their world renowned youth academy.

2) In 2002, Ajax sent van der Wiel to HFC Haarlem, due to what was described as a “mentality problem”. He later admitted he was spoiled and the time away at Haarlem was a wake up call which helped him mature.

3) Van der Wiel returned to Ajax in 2005 and his second spell was much more successful. He was even made team captain for the youth side.

4) The 29-year-old made his professional debut for the Ajax first team in March 2007, going on to play 187 games in all competitions and score 13 goals. He won five trophies, including two league titles, and was named Dutch Young Player of the Year for the 2009/10 season.

5) Van der Wiel made his first team debut for the Dutch national side in January 2009 and has played 46 times in total. His experience at the top level of the game includes appearances at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

6) Van der Wiel moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2012 and made 134 appearances in all competitions over four seasons, scoring five goals in the process. He won 12 trophies during his time with PSG, including four league titles.

7) Since leaving PSG, the 2008/09 Ajax Talent of the Year has struggled to make an impact. He played just one season with Turkish club Fenerbahçe and appeared in only six games for his most recent team, Italian side Cagliari.

Regardless of his recent form, van der Wiel is expected to be a huge success in MLS. While exact details of his contract have not been disclosed, Larson notes it is a multi-year deal which cannot exceed $1.5 million annually (as per the rules for a Targeted Allocation Money player).
