Toronto FC: Gamble pays off in MLS SuperDraft
By Paul Taylor
Toronto FC decide to move down on the first day of the MLS SuperDraft, but still get their man after selecting defender Tim Kubel.
Toronto FC took a risk on Friday in Philadelphia, which paid off. As a result, the first day of the MLS SuperDraft can be considered a success, regardless of how the event is perceived.
TFC sent their first round draft pick (23rd overall) to Minnesota United. In exchange, they acquired Minnesota’s second round draft pick (28th overall) and $50,000 in allocation money.
The gamble came to fruition when the Reds were able to select Tim Kubel, despite moving down five spots. As per the Canadian Press, via Sportsnet, TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko referred to picking the 24-year-old as a success.
The German native spent time in the FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund youth academies, before attending the University of Louisville for four years. During his time there, he scored 21 goals and added 26 assists (a program record) in 82 games.
This included six goals and seven assists in 19 games, during Kubel’s senior year. As a result he received a range of awards and nominations, including All-ACC First Team and United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American.

As per the Canadian Press, the youngster’s versatility will be of vital importance. He is capable of playing as either a right back or wing back, which are two areas of need for Toronto FC.
The Reds also added goalkeeper Drew Shepherd in the second round, with the 46th overall (and final) pick of the day. As per Torontofc.ca, the 23-year-old had a record of 30-12-10 during four years at Western Michigan University, keeping 29 clean sheets in the process.
TFC’s eventful day was completed with the news they had signed Toronto-born Liam Fraser to a homegrown contract. As per Sportsnet‘s John Molinaro, Bezbatchenko said in a press release:
"“Over that past two seasons with TFC II and during his time with our academy, Liam has shown a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, especially in his desire to learn the defensive midfield role at the next level.”"
