TORONTO, CANADA – AUGUST 5: Munenori Kawasaki /

ASIA

All of baseball has its eyes on Japan, to see which team 23-year-old phenom Shohei Ohtani signs with.

Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have traditionally been the most dominant Asian countries. The Toronto Blue Jays have had five players from Japan, one from South Korea, and one from Taiwan.

The debate here is whether we are picking the best player, or the player who had the best career as a Blue Jay. Tomo Ohka, Nori Aoki and Chien-Ming Wang all had solid careers, but they had sub-par, short tenures in Toronto.

Of these eight Asian-Blue Jays, fan-favourite Munenori Kawasaki is the only one to play more than a season in Toronto.

In 201 games over three seasons, Muni hit .242, with a .336 OBP, and hit his only career home run as a Jay. After his third season he became a member of the Chicago Cubs and won a World Series ring.

Kawasaki returned to Japan in 2017, signing with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, the team he played for before signing with the Seattle Mariners.
