Some interesting news came out recently, which potentially offers a big clue regarding Sebastian Giovinco’s future with Toronto FC.

Around this time last year, we wondered about Sebastian Giovinco’s future with Toronto FC. More specifically, how long would he stick around in Southern Ontario?

At the time, Giovinco stressed he was extremely happy in Toronto and had no plans to leave, until he had achieved all of his goals. Quite naturally, we assumed these goals included winning the MLS Cup.

Now, as last year’s final against the Seattle Sounders proved, you can never take anything for granted. However, let’s assume just for a moment that Toronto FC can close the deal this season, how would this impact Giovinco’s future with them?

At that point, the 30-year-old would have achieved pretty much everything MLS has to offer. Consider that his resume already includes League MVP, All-Star and record holder for most combined goals and assists in a season.

Again, assuming TFC win the MLS Cup this year, would Giovinco then decide it was time to move on? With a few good years theoretically left in the game, does he harbor ambitions to return to Europe and prove himself?

Well, if a recent development is anything to go by, the answer might actually be no. As per Oliver Platt of the excellent Walking The Red, it’s possible the Italian will be around for quite a while yet.

Platt referenced a Canadian marketing website called Strategy, which reported Giovinco had signed with a Toronto-based agency called Mackie Biernacki. The main reason for this, is to grow his brand in North America.

Further optimism for the Atomic Ant’s future with TFC, comes from one of his agents, Luca Pasqualin. As reported by Platt, a press release contained the following comments from Pasqualin:

"“We chose to work with Mackie Biernacki because they had the greatest sense of how to grow in a market that traditionally is known for hockey, hockey, and more hockey.”"

Certainly, this is an encouraging development for Toronto FC fans hoping Giovinco will be around for a while yet. However, it would be amiss if we didn’t at least consider a slightly different perspective.

More from Toronto FC

As things stand, Giovinco’s current deal runs through to the end of 2019. Essentially, he still has two seasons remaining, following the conclusion of the current campaign.

Basically, even if the Turin native did decide to move on after then, there is still enough time in the interim period to make a bigger impact in the Toronto market. Further, there is nothing to say he can’t still make money even after leaving, especially given the impact he has already made.

Overall though, it is positive news for Toronto FC and their fans. Now, lets see if Giovinco can lead his team to the MLS Cup, as this would be the best possible way for him to market himself in Toronto.
