SHAPIRO SPEAKS

If the Jays are planning to move Donaldson than Shapiro is not showing his cards.

"“We still feel like this roster is good enough to contend, if not this year then next year,” Shapiro said. “We need to do everything humanly possible to extend the window of competitiveness.”"

He continued to pour cold water on any notions of a full blown rebuild.

"“We are relentlessly trying to infuse young talent,” he said. “We are taking advantage of every opportunity to acquire that talent short of trading major-league players. And that’s the only thing we’re not doing.”"

It’s hard to imagine any meaningful infusion of “young talent” without trading Donaldson. Shipping off soon to be free agents like Estrada, Liriano, and Jose Bautista may not get much of a return.

The Blue Jays opened 2017 the oldest team in the league and their veterans – for the most part – have struggled. Shapiro may have to make some tough decisions soon on how to balance keeping the window open and the sustainability of the team.
