Three free agents the Toronto Raptors could target
Donatas Motiejunas, New Orleans Pelicans
Position: Power forward
Age: 26
2016-17 salary cap hit: $576,724
After breaking out during the 2014-15 season, where he averaged 12 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, the past two seasons have been rough for Motiejunas. From his contract dispute with the Rockets, to his lack of playing time in New Orleans, the 7-foot Lithuanian has struggled to earn minutes in the NBA.
However, the five-year pro is only 26 years old and there is reason to believe his potential has been untapped. When you look back at his fantastic 2014-15 campaign with the Rockets, Motiejunas shot an efficient 50.4 percent from the field and also shot 36.8 percent from behind the arc. With the Raptors lacking big men, does this not sound like the exact type of pick-and-pop seven-footer who would work well with DeRozan or, pending he re-signs, Lowry?
Considering his sporadic playing time and injury history, I doubt Motiejunas would cost much to sign and he could possibly even fall under the mid-level exception.
Lithuanian basketball journalist Donatas Urbonas reported back in May that Motiejunas just “wants to play for a team where he is a good fit and which play team basketball.” He also reported that Motiejunas would prefer to play for the Spurs, Warriors, Jazz or Wizards.
Perhaps his fellow countrymen, Jonas Valanciuanas, can help recruit him to the Raptors?
