Ponder why the Raptors are even called the Raptors

Dinosaurs aren’t really a part of Toronto’s history than any other location yet the 6 reps a T-Rex as it’s team’s logo. Just think about that for a second. Utah has the Jazz, New Orleans has the Pelicans, Boston has the Celtics and Toronto has the Raptors. Nearly every team in the league has a name that carries some significance to the place they play in. The Raptors are just… the Raptors.

When Jurassic Park came out 1993 kids loved it. They loved it so much execs for Toronto’s new expansion team thought it would be genius to associate the franchise (tangentially) to draw a young fan base.

There used to be a professional basketball team in Toronto, the Huskies, in 1946 but they only lasted for one season. The Huskies mantle was there to take when the NBA decided to expand but ownership moved away from it. If Jurassic Park didn’t come out a year before the NBA decided to expand into Toronto the club could have a completely different name.
