Despite playing with an under-strength lineup, Toronto FC secures an impressive 1-0 win at hostile CenturyLink Field, against the Seattle Sounders.

In reality, nothing will ever truly make up for Toronto FC‘s heartbreaking loss in the 2016 MLS Cup final. However, they at least started the healing process on Saturday, by beating the very same team which inflicted the most agonizing defeat in franchise history.

The 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders came courtesy of a cooly converted penalty by Jozy Altidore, who sent goalkeeper Stefan Frei the wrong way. That would be the same goalkeeper who made a sensational save versus Altidore in extra time last December.

Despite being outgained 37.6 percent to 63.4 in possession, TFC still arguably deserved their win in the intimidating atmosphere of CenturyLink Field. They created almost as many chances as the hosts (11-12) and managed to get more genuine opportunities on target (5-2).

However, what really made this victory impressive, was the fact Toronto FC were missing four regular starters against the Sounders. This including Sebastian Giovinco, the best player in MLS, and Victor Vazquez, who entered the weekend leading the league in assists.

Along with Steve Beitashour and Eric Zavaleta, they were left back in Toronto to rest, with the team in the midst of five games in just 16 days. Along with travelling across country on a short week and playing on a questionable artificial turf, the decision by TFC head coach Greg Vanney actually made a lot of sense.

In the process, the Reds picked up an unexpected three points against a Sounders’ team which was previously undefeated at home this season. In addition, TFC proved what has been said all along, about this roster having superior depth.

With Saturday’s win, Toronto FC at least temporarily move to the top of the Eastern Conference. In an ominous sign for the rest of the league, they are currently on a run of four consecutive wins.

Even more importantly though, Vanney’s men showed they can win without Giovinco, even in hostile territory. It’s still early, but fans will likely be growing in confidence that their beloved team can take the next and final step this season, towards ultimate glory.
