Buffalo Bills 2017 NFL Draft Class: Grading the Players
By Paul Taylor
Quarterback Nathan Peterman (Round 5, 171st Overall)
Grade: B+
Bio: Played at Tennessee & Pittsburgh / 6 foot 2 / 226 pounds
Resume: Career year in 2016, with 2,855 passing yards, 27 touchdowns & 7 picks
Strengths: Has quick release and excellent accuracy – both fit in with the offensive scheme the Bills will run in 2017, a smart player who has shown an ability to overcome adversity – key for the quarterback position, decent mobility.
Weaknesses: Doesn’t have great arm strength – could be an issue in late-season games in Buffalo, can be inconsistent at times.
Overall: Most draft experts seem to be in agreement that Peterman was a steal for the Bills. (He was projected to go in the third or fourth round.) Further, the likes of Kiper and Sports Illustrated‘s Chris Burke believe he could be a future starter in Buffalo. Certainly, his experience in a pro-style offense helps, but more immediately, he will challenge Cardale Jones for the backup role.
