Unlike the Grammys and Oscars this is a progressive award show. Awards given out here may not be the same awards handed out next quarter. This is a celebration of the Toronto Raptors so far and a crystallization of the culture.

Welcome to the Toronto Raptors‘ Quarterly Awards, the show where everything is made up and the awards don’t matter. Yep, the awards don’t matter, just like the Grammy’s and the Oscars – the only difference is we don’t make people dress up for ours.

We’re three quarters of the way through the regular season and just like a sand mandala, nothing is ever permanent in the NBA. First you think the Raptors are going to contend for the second seed, then DeMar DeRozan gets injured.

Next, the trade for Paul Millsap materializes and dematerializes in a matter of days. Then the Raptors finally make a trade for Serge Ibaka to fill the 4 spot, solidifying their rotation until news of Kyle Lowry‘s wrist reaches our ears.

A lot has changed over the past quarter of the season, so it seems apt to give out some more awards for events and people that may get lost in the ever shifting sands of the NBA. Awards given out today may not be the same awards given out next quarter.

This is a celebration of the team and a crystallization of the culture right now. This is the Raptors’ mandala right before being washed away, to make room for another at the end of the season.
