Toronto Raptors Quarterly Awards for 2016 Season
By Demar Grant
Bench Player of the Year
Patrick Patterson
Ever heard of a super sub Power Forward? No? Me neither. But Dwane Casey has been determined to make it a reality and keep Patrick Patterson on the bench even though the lineup of Lowry-DeRozan-Carroll-Patterson-Valanciunas is +25.6 points per 100 possessions against the rest of the league.
I honestly don’t understand why he’s chained to the bench, the folks over at Raptors Republic tried to explain it but I ain’t buying it. You play your best lineups more because they’re your best lineups. There is nothing physically taxing (other than conditioning) that would stop Patterson from playing 32 minutes instead of 28 minutes.
Also, if the fear of drop off in bench production is so prevalent JV could play more minutes with the bench where they would actually be able to use his skill set instead of him being a measly glass cleaner. Alas, Patterson is still a bench player as of now, so he wins the award but we aren’t happy about it
