Lanny McDonald: 1973 NHL Amateur Draft – First Round (fourth overall)

GP: 1111     G: 500     PTS: 1006

Drafted by Toronto in 1973, Lanny McDonald — complete with his bushy moustache — is one of the most iconic players to ever play in the NHL.

After scoring less than 50 points in his first two years as a pro, McDonald established himself as a formidable player and recorded 93 points in his third year in 1975-76. In each of the following four years he scored over 40 goals.

Due to a controversial dispute between new Toronto general manager, George Imlach, and captain Darryl Sittler, McDonald was shipped off to the Colorado Rockies (now New Jersey Devils).

Three short years later, the moustache was moved again, this time to the Calgary Flames.

Over the next eight years, McDonald played 492 games, scored 215 goals, and became one of the best players in Flames history. After winning the Stanley Cup at the conclusion of the 1988-89 season he chose to retire, ending his 18-year career.

In 1992, McDonald was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
