Toronto Maple Leafs: Top 5 Draft Picks of All-Time
Rick Kehoe: 1971 NHL Amateur Draft — Second Round (22nd overall)
GP: 906 G: 371 PTS: 767
Over his 13-year NHL career, Rick Kehoe played in only three seasons for the Leafs. He scored 33 goals in the 1972-73 season, but followed that up with only 18 the next year. After his drop in production, Toronto promptly traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In his first year with the Pens, Kehoe made the Leafs pay for their ill-advised trade. He potted 32 goals, reaching the 30-goal mark for the first of five times over the next 10 seasons (three other years he finished with 29).
In exchange for Kehoe?
The Leafs traded the speedy right-winger for Blaine Stoughton and a first round pick in 1977 that turned out to be defenceman Trevor Johansen. Together, the two played 253 games for the Leafs and combined for 79 points.
The Kehoe trade will go down as one of the worst in Maple Leafs history, especially after his 55-goal season in 1980-81, the same year he won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.
