1) Sebastian Giovinco’s quest for a second MLS MVP award

If you’d asked if this was possible just a few weeks ago, a lot of people would have said no, without any hesitation. Givovinco was on an eight-game scoring drought, arguably feeling the weight of carrying a team missing the likes of Michael Bradley and Will Johnson.

Not that the Italian had totally gone off the boil, as evidenced by still being involved in the majority of TFC’s goals. Regardless, at that point he looked like a long-shot to repeat as the league’s best player.

Then something happened, starting with a hat-trick against DC United, in a convincing 4-1 win. This started a blazing run of form for Giovinco, as he led them to five wins in six games, taking them to within a single point at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Now, the 29-year old finds himself in familiar territory, leading all players with 27 combined goals and assists (16 and 11 respectively). Not only does he now have an excellent chance to repeat as MLS MVP, but he also has the opportunity to beat the league record for combined goals and assists in a season, which he set just last year.
