3) Scotty Bowman

Regular season: 210-134-60

Playoffs: 18-18

Bowman is quite rightly acknowledged as the best head coach in NHL history. Certainly, it’s tough to argue with a resume that includes the most regular season wins, playoff victories and Stanley Cups.

In that respect, if this were any of the other four teams the Verdun, Quebec native coached in the NHL, he would more than likely rank higher than third. Unfortunately for the Sabres, the success he accomplished with other teams didn’t happen Western New York.

Of course, this is not to imply Bowman didn’t enjoy some success in Buffalo. For a start, he made the playoffs in each of his first five seasons in charge, which included one division title and one appearance in the semi-finals.

When it’s all said and done, the 82-year old ranks second in Sabres history for most wins as a head coach. However, it’s his inability to at least take the team to the Stanley Cup, which stops him from ranking higher on our list.
