Toronto Blue Jays: 4 Outfielders Vying for the Opening Day Roster
By Paul Taylor
4) Junior Lake
Drafted: Signed by the Chicago Cubs as an undrafted amateur free agent in 2007
MLB career stats: 201 games – 16 HR/46 RBI – .237/.278/.377 – 15 SB/31 BB
Last season: 29 games – 1 HR/5 RBI – .200/.238/.325 – 4 SB/4 BB
Review: Undrafted in 2007, Lake was picked up as a free agent by the Chicago Cubs. While not the most auspicious of beginnings, he was just thankful to get a chance.
The 25-year old had to be patient, toiling his way through the lower levels, before finally getting an opportunity with the Cubs in 2013. He made sure to grab it with both hands.
In his Major League debut, Lake went 3-for-4, with a double and a stolen base. He went on to have 15 hits through his first seven games, tied for third-most by a player since 1900.
However, the San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic native was unable to sustain his blistering start. He was eventually traded to the Baltimore Orioles during last season, before being claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays in December.
Lake has had no issues performing at the Minor League level, but has so far failed to translate this to the Majors with any real consistency. He certainly has the athleticism to succeed and has key attributes, including speed and a good throwing arm.
Projection for opening day: Some analysts will tell you Lake is Brown’s main competition to secure the backup role in outfield. However, it’s still going to be difficult for him to make the opening day roster.
