4) Super Bowl XXV

The New York Giants one-point victory over the Buffalo Bills is the closest in Super Bowl history. And that in itself, makes it worthy of being on this list.

However, it goes much deeper than that. Set against the backdrop of increased security as a result of the Gulf War, the Giants and Bills combined to deliver a truly memorable game.

Super Bowl 25 was billed as a match-up between the immovable object (the Giants defence) and the irresistible force (the Bills offence). In the end, it was Ottis Anderson and the New York offence that proved to be the deciding factor, setting a new Super Bowl record for time of possession, while keeping Jim Kelly and company off the field.

The Bills had just enough offence to keep the game close, with Kelly driving them down the field to set up Scott Norwood for the winning field goal with eight seconds remaining. Unfortunately for Bills fans, wide right signalled the start of unparalleled heartbreak not seen before or since in the Super Bowl era, with four consecutive losses in the big game.
