Heading into this game, hardly anyone believed the New York Giants could win. In fact, the majority of people didn’t even expect much of a challenge from the G-Men.
However, maybe we all should have taken the week 17 clash into account, when the Patriots barely escaped the Meadowlands with a 38-35 victory. What followed was one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.
A lot of experts like to offer David Tyree‘s miracle catch as evidence of how lucky the Giants were to win. However, while that play in itself was fortuitous, there was nothing lucky about their overall performance.
The Giants defence – especially the defensive line – played an outstanding game, limiting the Patriots record-breaking offence to a mere 274 net yards. When it was all said and done, New York deserved their win, with New England being left to wonder about what might have been.
