Buffalo Bills: Top 10 Super Bowls of All Time
By Paul Taylor
7) Super Bowl XXIII
Some people may wonder why a game which was only 3-3 at the half is on this list. However, after five straight blowouts, the game between the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals was just what the Doctor ordered.
As Randy Cross remarked afterwards: “The Super Bowl was finally Super!” The 49ers entered as favorites, but the Bengals fancied their chances, thanks to having the NFL’s number one rated offence.
In the end, it was the two defences which rose to the occasion. The Bengals in particular deserved praise for holding their own, even after losing their inspirational leader Tim Krumrie.
The game’s key moment came when the late Lewis Billups dropped a sure interception in the end zone, with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice making them pay on the very next play. In the end, Montana lived up to his Joe Cool nickname, by leading a 92-yard drive and throwing the winning score to John Taylor, with 34 seconds remaining.
