Abu Kigab
Year: Class of 2017
School: Prolific Prep, California
Hometown: St. Catherines, Ontario
Unlike the rest of the names on this list, the 6’ 6” Kigab was relatively unknown heading into the 2014-15 school year. He was certainly athletic, running the floor and dunking in traffic with ease, but seemed to lack the exceptional dribbling ability and outside shot that he would need to make it to the next level of top tier NCAA division one schools.
All of that changed however during his sophomore year with the St. Francis Phoenix of his hometown St. Catherines. Kigab showed a drastically improved shot off the dribble, ability to break down defenders, and a relentless motor under the basket that only became more apparent with his long, athletic frame.
The resulting season caught the attention of the higher ups, and Canada basketball selected Kigab to the U19 team for the World championships over the summer, where he posted 3.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. Not bad for a kid who was only 16 at the time.
You could argue that the FIBA exposure has changed Kigab’s life, as he is now currently enrolled in Prolific Prep Academy in California for this school year, and is fielding offers from Virginia Tech, Baylor and Oregon, just to name a few.
