Fifteen years after being selected by the Leafs, Boyes will finally suit up for the blue and white. When Toronto selected him with the 24th pick in the 2000 draft, they flipped him to San Jose for Owen Nolan.
This was during a time when the team did not really draft and develop prospects. Now, the 33 year-old will have to leave a good impression on the coaching staff or other teams, as he comes into camp on a tryout contract.
He has posted 35+ points in the past three seasons. As such, it looks like he is far from being the player he was with the St. Louis Blues, where he scored 43 and 33 goals from 2007-2009.
Talking with Sportsnet, Boyes realizes that it will be tough to make the Leafs and he does not feel entitled to anything.
"“This isn’t my first time. It’s a mind-set of going out there and earning what you get. Nothing is going to be given to me,” Boyes said. “There’s no bitterness.”"
