Top 20 Moments in Toronto Raptors History
12. Damon Stoudamire selected first overall
The first ever selection in Toronto Raptors history went a little along the lines of: “with the seventh pick in the 1995 NBA draft. Their first draft and their first pick. The Toronto Raptors select, Damon Stoudamire, from the University of Arizona.”
The teams first draft choice of all-time is an obvious top moment for many reasons, but when you consider some of the criticism general manager Isaiah Thomas received for selected a 5-10 point guard known as ‘Mighty Mouse’ with the franchise’s first pick, the importance of the selection actually working out is only magnified.
Stoudamire went on to win Rookie of the Year honours. Even though he did not workout long-term for the Raptors, the first pick in franchise history was not a terrible one. I mean, it’s not like we tried to build our franchise around Bryant “Big Country” Reeves.
