Week One Recap of Ontarian’s Playing D-I NCAA Football
After releasing the list of Ontarian’s playing Division-I NCAA Football last week, here is a recap of how each player performed during week one of the college football season.
Seniors:
Brandon Bridge, Quarterback, South Alabama (Mississauga, ON)
Brandon Bridge and the South Alabama Jaguars were on bye this week. They start their season next week at Kent State.
James Bodanis, Offensive Line, Michigan State (Toronto, ON)
Michigan State routed Jacksonville State 45-7, but Bodanis did not see the field on Saturday.

Oliver Kathalay, Defensive Back, Eastern Michigan (Mississauga, ON)
Eastern Michigan snuck by Morgan State 31-28, as a last second field goal from Dylan Mulder secured the victory for the Eagles. Oliver Kathalay did play on Saturday, but did not record any statistics.

Shaquille Murray-Lawrence, Running Back, UNLV (Scarborough, ON)
UNLV suffered a blowout loss to Arizona on Friday, as Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez had his offence in fine form to open the season. Shaquille Murray-Lawrence did not play on Friday.

Dillon Guy, Offensive Line, Buffalo (Hamilton, ON)
Buffalo beat Duquesne 38-28, to open the 2014 season on Saturday. Offensive linemen Dillon Guy did not participate in the game for Buffalo.

Juniors:
Tevaun Smith, Wide Receiver, Iowa (Toronto, ON)
Iowa survived a scare from Northern Iowa on Saturday, as the Hawkeyes beat the Panthers 31-23. Tevaun Smith put together a fine game, racking up a team-high 35 yards rushing on 1 carry, as well as 3 receptions for 17 receiving yards, and one highlight reel touchdown catch.

Smith’s ability to make difficult plays look easy, is quickly helping his reputation grow with the Hawkeyes fan base out in Iowa City.

Arjen Colquhoun, Cornerback, Michigan State (Windsor, ON)
Michigan State routed Jacksonville State 45-7 on Saturday. Spartans cornerback Arjen Colquhoun had 4 total tackles (2 solo and 2 assisted) and 2 pass breakups, helping the Spartans defence hold the overmatched Jacksonville State offence.
Colquhoun did not start the game, but he saw plenty of action throughout it. Colquhoun will need to play well again next week, as Sparty travels west, to face the high-octane Oregon Ducks in Eugene.

Juwan Brescacin, Wide Receiver, Northern Illinois (Toronto, ON)
Northern Illinois cruised to a 55-3 victory over Presbyterian on Thursday. Juwan Brescacin had 2 receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown came on a long 49-yard reception, that would help put the Huskies up 41-0.

Josiah St. John, Offensive Line, Oklahoma (Pickering, ON)
Oklahoma routed Louisiana Tech 48-16 to open the season. Although St. John did not start for the Sooners, he did see time on the field.

Mitchell Winters, Defensive Line, Miami (Ohio) (Mississauga, ON)
Miami (Ohio) could not contain Rakeem Cato and the Thundering Herd offence, as the Redhawks lost 42-27 to Marshall on Saturday. Mississauga’s Mitch Winters had 3 tackles (2 solo, 1 assisted) in the game.

Terry Ayeni, Defensive End, Iowa State (Toronto, ON)
Iowa State suffered a 34-14 loss to FCS program North Dakota State. While the loss to a FCS program is painful in itself, the Cyclones lost at home in Ames, making the loss that much worse. Terry Ayeni did not play in the game, as he is recovering from a torn ACL.

Trent Corney, Defensive End, Viriginia (Brockville, ON)
Virginia hung in there against number seven ranked UCLA, but the Cavaliers would fall short, as they lost 28-20 on Saturday. Trent Corney would see time in the game, but did not record any statistics.

Allison Campbell, Offensive Line, Eastern Michigan (Kagawon, ON)
Eastern Michigan snuck by Morgan State 31-28, as a last second field goal from Dylan Mulder secured the victory for the Eagles.
Allison Campbell started at right guard for the Eagles, as he helped pave the way for a dominant Eagles rushing attack. Eastern Michigan ran for 320 yards, 20 rushing first downs and 3 touchdowns, as Morgan State had no answer for the Eagles offensive line.

Michael Topolinski, Linebacker, Michigan State (Richmond Hill, ON)
Michigan State routed Jacksonville State 45-7, but Topolinski did not see the field on Saturday.

Sophomores:
Akeel Lynch, Running Back, Penn State (Toronto, ON)
Penn State beat Central Florida on a last second field goal, in a thrilling 26-24 victory. Akeel Lynch had a quiet day Saturday, as he had 1 carry for 7 yards, and a 1 kick return for 11 yards.
Lynch should continue to improve as the season progresses. He will look to make an impact this week, when the Nittany Lions return home to Happy Valley, to take on the much improved Akron Zips.

Aug 20, 2013; Blacksburg, VA, USA; Virginia Tech Hokies (NCAA football) wide receiver Joshua Stanford (5) during practice at the Steve Johnson Practice Fields. Mandatory Credit: Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports
Joshua Stanford, Wide Receiver, Virginia Tech (Mississauga, ON)
After letting William & Mary hang around for the better part of three-quarters, Virginia Tech pulled away from the Tribe late in the third quarter with a 39 yard touchdown run. From there, the Hokies never looked back, as they went on to win the game 34-9.
Mississauga’s Josh Stanford managed 1 reception, for 7 yards on Saturday, before leaving the game with a hamstring injury. With the Hokies set to take on Ohio State in Columbus this Saturday, receivers coach Aaron Moorehead told reporters that he expects Stanford to play.

Eli Ankou, Defensive Line, UCLA (Ottawa, ON)
Number seven ranked UCLA, certainly didn’t play there best game on Saturday, but the Bruins were still able to manage a 28-20 victory over Virginia. UCLA’s Eli Ankou had 1 assisted tackle on Saturday.

Faith Ekakitie, Defensive Line, Iowa (Brampton, ON)
Iowa survived a scare from Northern Iowa on Saturday, as the Hawkeyes beat the Panthers 31-23. Faith Ekakitie recorded 1 assisted tackle in the game, and 0.5 a tackle for a loss. As part of the Hawkeyes defensive line rotation, Ekakitie played well up front throughout the game.

Ryan Doull, Offensive Line, Virginia (Kanata, ON)
Virginia hung in there against number seven ranked UCLA, but the Cavaliers would fall short, as they lost 28-20 on Saturday. Ryan Doull started the game at left guard, but would be briefly removed after a false start penalty. Doull would return to the game and help the Cavaliers offence collect 386 total yards of offence – out gaining UCLA by 28 yards.
Doull should start again next week, when the Cavaliers welcome Richmond to Scott Stadium.

Freshmen:
David Knevel, Offensive Line, Nebraska (Brantford, ON)
Nebraska blew out Florida Atlantic on Saturday at Tom Osborne field, by a final score of 55-7. The Cornhuskers had their way with Florida Atlantic all game, compiling an eye-popping 784 total yards of offence. David Knevel would play in the second half of this game with the backup linemen. Nebraska would score three more touchdowns with Knevel on the field.

Matthew Boateng, Defensive Back, Kansas (Pickering, ON)
Kansas was on bye this past weekend. They open their season against Southeast Missouri this Saturday.
Ryan Hunter, Offensive Line, Bowling Green (North Bay, ON)
Bowling Green lost 59-31 to Western Kentucky on Friday. Ryan Hunter would dress for this game, but would not see time until the second half.

Michael O’Connor, Quarterback, Penn State (Ottawa, ON)
Penn State beat Central Florida on a last second field goal, in a thrilling 26-24 victory in Dublin, Ireland. Michael O’Connor did not see the field on Saturday, as starting quarterback Christian Hackenburg led the Nittany Lions down the field for their game-winning drive.

Tyler Topolinski, Defensive End, Michigan State (Richmond Hill, ON)
Michigan State routed Jacksonville State 45-7, but Topolinski did not see the field on Saturday.

Trey Rutherford, Offensive Line, Connecticut (Markham, ON)
UCONN fell 35-10 to BYU in their season opener on Saturday. BYU would get up 28-7 on the Huskies at halftime, and never look back. Markham’s Trey Rutherford would dress for the game, but not see much playing time.

Peter Godber, Offensive Line, Rice (Toronto, ON)
Rice was routed 48-17 by the number 17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Even though the Owls did put up a fight, they were clearly overmatched in South Bend. Toronto native Peter Godber did see time in the ball game, but his contributions were overshadowed by the lopsided final score.

Kain Anzovino, Long Snapper, Kent State (Fort Erie, ON)
Kent State fell 17-14 to in-state Ohio. Anzovino did not participate in the game.

Tyler O’Henly, Offensive Line, Buffalo (London, ON)
Buffalo beat Duquesne 38-28, to open the 2014 season on Saturday. Offensive linemen Tyler O’Henly did not participate in the game for Buffalo.
