Randy Carlyle was fired by the Anaheim Ducks. Randy Carlyle was hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Toronto Maple Leafs host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night. Carlyle will be coaching against his former team! IT’S A GRUDGE MATCH.
Carlyle coached in Anaheim for nearly seven years, for a total of 516 regular-season and in addition to 62 playoff games, before he fell out of favour with management in the 2011-12 season. Toronto let go of Ron Wilson shortly afterwards and before you know it Brian Burke had managed to add pugnacity behind the bench in addition to the face punching roster he had assembled.
Carlyle attempted to use some of his coaching magic to get the Leafs back on track, after struggling for the past 3 games he started off practice on Monday with a little bit of ball hockey, having players stickhandle with orange balls instead of pucks. Whether this will prevent the Leafs from being woefully outshot once again (it probably won’t) remains to be seen, but I guess it’s something right?
The Ducks come into Tuesday night with a 7-1-0 record, thanks in large part to an offense that’s clicking despite the offseason loss of Bobby Ryan, and solid goaltending from the likes of Viktor Fasth and Jonas Hiller. Coming off a successful season that many attributed to luck much like the Maple Leafs, the Ducks unlike the Leafs have improved their possession game leading to this year’s success.
Prediction
Those of us that were prognosticating regression for the Maple Leafs are getting far too smug, that means the Leafs are due for a big win in which they get dominated throughout the game. 4-1 Maple Leafs.
