Toronto Blue Jays: Kevin Pillar’s heroic extends win streak to 5 games

With the Toronto Blue Jays aiming for a four-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners, Kevin Pillar saved the day with a walk off home run.

As the Toronto Blue Jays continue to add injured players to the list, you would think this would impact the team negatively, as it did at the start of the season. But oddly, the team has found a way to move forward and on Sunday, the surge came from Kevin Pillar.

The amount of injuries the Blue Jays have is no longer something they need to worry about. It’s unfortunate, but the team has been able to make it work as now it looks like Steve Pearce will be joining the casualty list with calf tightness.

But despite this latest injury, the game ended with success and that was all in part to the player who leads the American League in hits.

The Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners were tied 2-2 heading into the seventh inning. It was up to Ryan Tepera to put up zero’s for Toronto, setting the stage for the bottom of the ninth with the team searching for someone to play the hero.

With two outs and Pillar up to the plate, anticipating a hit from the 28-year old is most definitely what many had expected. With Pillar going 0-for-3 with a walk, he was bound to have some power boiling in him.

Not only did Pillar get a hit, he made sure there was no chance of it staying in the ball park. What better way to celebrate mother’s day with your mother in attendance, than with your first walk-off home run?

He’ll Catch It

The home run wasn’t the only crucial play for Pillar. He also made a circus catch to take away a hit from the Mariners, which kept the base runners from advancing. It was another ridiculous catch that he can add to his résumé of spectacular grabs.

According to CBC, not only was this Pillar’s first career walk-off home run, he is the first Toronto centre-fielder to hit a walk-off since Vernon Wells in July 2006. Pillar is making history, while also making manager John Gibbons and Jays fans very proud.

If Pillar continues to make these unbelievable catches, he is more than worthy of winning a gold glove and making a case as one of the top centre-fielders in the league. At the end of the day, you might spectacular plays, but never anything better than the one Pillar made. He’s just the type of player that makes the game so much more entertaining.
