Free agent fullback/tight end Kyle Juszczyk has generated a ton of interest on the free agent market, but it sounds like the Buffalo Bills are the favourites to land the longtime Raven.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Buffalo Bills have emerged as the frontrunners to sign former Baltimore Ravens fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

Previous reports were linking Juszczyk to the Browns since he went to high school just 30 miles outside of Cleveland, and the Browns front office has a number of Harvard grads in it, which is where Juszczyk played his college ball. The Ravens were also reportedly trying to work out a deal to retain him.

Juszczyk, who turns 26 in April, was a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in 2013 and he’s spent all four seasons of his career with the Ravens. Known as an excellent blocker (he graded as Pro Football Focus’ No. 1 fullback in 2016), Juszczyk developed into an integral part of the Ravens’ offence. He’s also a solid pass catcher, hauling in 78 receptions for 587 yards and four touchdowns over the past two seasons.

Given his versatility, Juszczyk is apparently searching for a team that would be willing to use him in a hybrid fullback/tight end role, more or less using him as an H-Back of sorts, depending on what kind of offensive scheme you’re running.

With fullback Jerome Felton being a UFA, and Nick O’Leary the backup behind starting tight end Charles Clay, the Bills do have a need at both fullback and tight end. Juszczyk’s versatility would be a boon for the Bills’ roster.

Based on the reaction from fans on social media, I get why people are concerned about the Bills spending some of their cap space, which is roughly around $21 million, on a fullback. I’m sure the Felton signing is the first thing they think of when they see the Bills pursuing a free agent fullback. However, Juszczyk is much different than Felton.

Again, his versatility makes him more than just a great blocker. He’s a player who can catch the ball out of the backfield, can lineup all over the field, and, perhaps most importantly, play a high snap count because of his ability to play multiple positions.

If Juszczyk was your traditional smash-mouth fullback, then, yes, this would be a move that makes little to no sense for the Bills, especially given the price tag that Juszczyk is sure to command. But since he’s a versatile player who can contribute in a number of ways, he could prove to be a great mid-level signing for the Bills.
