If the latest reports are true, Carolina Panthers’ defensive coordinator Sean McDermott is set to become the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills

It appears the Buffalo Bills‘ search for their next head coach is over. As per reports from WGR550’s Sal Capaccio and Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News, Sean McDermott is the favorite to land the job.

Referencing multiple sources familiar with the situation, Capaccio writes that the front office and ownership were all extremely impressed with McDermott after interviewing him over a week ago. Carucci adds that the Bills could finalize an agreement with the Carolina Panthers‘ defensive coordinator within the next day or so.

McDermott was interviewed by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, but he was apparently as impressed with the Bills as they were with him. If a contract can be finalized quickly, he is set to be introduced to the Buffalo media on Friday.

If and when the 42-year old becomes the next head coach, Capaccio adds that former San Diego Chargers‘ head coach Mike McCoy will join him as his offensive coordinator. Such a move leaves a huge question mark over the future of Anthony Lynn.

The Bills’ front office are extremely high on Lynn, and he was considered the other top candidate for the head coaching position. However, McDermott could conceivably have no wish to include him on his coaching staff.

It will also be interesting to see what McDermott does with the defense. Rex Ryan ran a 3-4 alignment, whereas the former Philadelphia Eagles‘ defensive coordinator prefers to deploy a 4-3 scheme.

In truth, the Bills’ front office are unlikely to have an issue with such a change, especially after how the defense performed during the two past seasons under Ryan. The firm belief is that they can play much better, given the talent currently on the roster.

One final intriguing factor to consider, is whether McDermott would get — or indeed has demanded — final say over the 53-man roster. General manager Doug Whaley reportedly wants to maintain control, but this could be compromised by how much the Bills’ next head coach wants input into this aspect, combined with how eager the organization are to secure his services.
