Toronto Blue Jays Shut Down Brett Lawrie

Brett Lawrie‘s 2014 season is officially over.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Tuesday that they have shut down the dynamic third baseman for the rest of the year. The move comes ahead of Toronto’s opener of a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Lawrie has been out of action with an oblique injury since August 6th and has made 70 appearances for the team this season. He also dealt with a fractured finger that forced him to miss 36 games. In his return, Lawrie only lasted a few innings before being bit by the injury bug once again.

The young infielder saw time at third base and second base this year, batting .247 while launching a career-high 12 home runs. Lawrie took to Twitter to apologize to his teammates and Blue Jays fans.

The Jays made a number of additional roster moves on Tuesday. Notable call ups include Brandon Morrow (yes, he’s back), Daniel Norris, Sean Nolin, and Mississauga’s own Dalton Pompey, who has soared through the minors this year. The full list can be found here. Maybe this influx of players can rejuvenate Toronto’s slim playoff hopes.
