As the start of a new NHL season gradually gets closer, it’s the opportune time to quickly go over the current roster for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Several new faces were added to the roster this off-season, including Petri Kontiola, Roman Polak and Stephane Robidas. At the same time, several familiar faces from the past returned to the lineup in the likes of Matt Frattin and Leo Komarov.
These players join an established lineup that features Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Joffrey Lupul, Nazem Kadri, Tyler Bozak, Dion Phaneuf, Cody Franson, Jake Gardiner, Morgan Rielly and Jonathan Bernier at the core.
Admittedly, these are a lot of different names to remember and things will get even more tricky once the new season begins with inevitable movement between the big club and the Toronto Marlies.
To help you (and us) navigate this messy list of names, we’re launching a roster preview series today for the Leafs based on the roster as it stands today. Some of the names below will be cut by the time the final roster is announced, but there’s still a good chance they’ll appear at some point during the season so why not take note of them now?
The roster we’ll be using, as I mentioned, is the one dated for today, August 21st, 2014. Who knows what shape the roster will take by Oct. 8th, 2014 when the season finally opens or mid-February 2015 when the Leafs are hopefully in the thick of the playoff race.
This preview series will take you through the pre-season period right up to the very start of the new NHL season. In this sense, it should help you through training camp and exhibition play where you’ll be bombarded with a bevy of new names on a near daily basis.
Each profile will only contain the bare essentials, saving you time to devote towards watching everyone’s favourite team. God, I love being a Leafs fan.
With that in mind, we hope you’ll join us again tomorrow when the first entry on Carter Ashton will appear. From here, we’ll make our way down the lineup until hitting James Reimer at the very end (I’m sure he’d rather be #1).
