Toronto Blue Jays infielder Maicer Izturis felt two pops in his knee Sunday afternoon after tripping on the dugout steps, and took himself out of the game. Today, an MRI revealed that he has a tear of his lateral collatral ligament in his left knee and will require surgery, and with the rehab likely miss 4-6 months. Izturis will seek a 2nd opinion before taking action, but if the estimates are true, Izturis’ season will all but come to an end after playing just 10 games in 2014.
Maicer Izturis’ season was off to a hot start, hitting .455 in his first 7 games before cooling off over the next 3. Izturis is currently batting .286/.324/.314 on the 2014 season.
Izturis joined the Blue Jays in 2013 after playing 8 seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. Batting .236/.288/.310 with 5 home runs, 32 RBIs in 107 games before Izturis’ season came to an early end in 2013 when he suffered a sprained left ankle in mid-August.
