Reports coming out are that Toronto Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas was charged with a DUI Monday morning when he was spotted at a drive-thru in Wasaga Beach with open beer bottles in his vehicle.
According to CBC Sports, Valaciunas was later arrested at a home and charged with driving under the influence. Valanciunas is charged with having greater than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood and is to appear in court in nearby Collingwood on April 22.
The Toronto Raptors released a statement regarding the situation:
We were made aware this morning of the incident involving Jonas Valanciunas and are disappointed he has put himself in this situation. We take this matter very seriously as we have the highest expectations for all members of our organization.
At this time we are continuing to gather information and we will comment further when appropriate.
The former 5th overall pick, 21 year old Lithuanian is in his 2nd year in the NBA and with the Raptors, and averaging 11 ppg, 8.6 rpg in 76 games this season.
The Toronto Raptors also released a statement made by Jonas Valanciunas on the situation:
I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously. I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them.
